Opening a VCF file on your device

  • iPhone: tap the .vcf in Mail, Messages, or Files. iOS shows the contacts with an Add All Contacts button.
  • Android: Contacts → Fix & manage (or Settings) → Import from file. Tapping the file in a file manager often works too.
  • Mac: double-click the file and the Contacts app offers to import it.
  • Windows: double-clicking opens Windows Contacts or Outlook, which shows only the first contact of a multi-contact file. Use the viewer above to see them all.
  • Google Contacts: contacts.google.com → Import. Only do this if you want the contacts saved to your Google account.

What a VCF file contains

A VCF (vCard) file is plain text. Each contact sits between BEGIN:VCARD and END:VCARD, one field per line: FN for the name, TEL for each phone number, EMAIL, ADR for the address, NOTE, and often a PHOTO encoded as text. Older Android phones encode names in quoted-printable, which is why a VCF opened in a text editor can show strings like =C5=81 instead of letters. The viewer decodes all of that.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open a VCF file?

Drop it on the viewer above and every contact appears as a list you can read and search, on any computer or phone with a browser. To add the contacts to your phone instead, open the file on the phone itself: iPhone shows an Add All Contacts button, and Android imports it from the Contacts app.

Why does my VCF file show only one contact?

A single .vcf often holds hundreds of contacts, but Windows and Outlook open only the first one when you double-click it. The viewer reads the whole file and shows all of them, with the count at the top.

Is it safe to open my contacts here?

Yes. The file is read by your browser on your own device. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or sent anywhere, and closing the tab clears it.

Can I open several VCF files at once?

Yes. Select or drop several .vcf files together and they appear as one list. Download Excel then saves all of them in a single spreadsheet.

Can I edit a VCF file here?

Not directly. Download the contacts as Excel, edit the sheet, then turn it back into a VCF with the Excel to VCF converter.

Which VCF versions work?

vCard 2.1, 3.0, and 4.0, including iPhone and iCloud exports, Android exports with encoded non-Latin names, Google Contacts, and Outlook. Contact photos are not shown.
