Why an .xlsx instead of a CSV

A CSV is plain text, and Excel guesses what each value is when it opens one. For contact lists it guesses wrong:

  • Leading zeros vanish. 07700 900123 becomes 7700900123.
  • Long numbers turn into scientific notation. 919876543210 shows as 9.19877E+11.
  • Accented names can break if the file is not read as UTF-8.

The workbook from this page stores every cell as text and keeps the header row frozen, so the sheet opens exactly as the contacts were saved. If you need a CSV for a CRM import, the VCF to CSV converter makes one.

Columns in the Excel file

Columns appear only when at least one contact has that field, so the sheet has no empty columns.

ColumnComes from
NameFull name as shown in the address book (FN)
First Name, Last NameFrom the structured name (N)
Phone, Phone 2, Phone 3 …Every TEL entry, in file order
Email, Email 2 …Every EMAIL entry
Organization, TitleCompany and job title
Address, City, State, ZIP, CountryThe preferred address, or the first one

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a VCF file to Excel?

Drop the .vcf on the converter above, check the preview, and click Download Excel. You get an .xlsx workbook with one row per contact and a header row, ready to open in Excel, Numbers, or Google Sheets. The file is read in your browser and never uploaded.

Can Excel open a VCF file directly?

Not usefully. Excel has no vCard import, so opening a .vcf shows raw lines like BEGIN:VCARD and TEL;TYPE=CELL in a single column. Converting to .xlsx first gives you one contact per row and one field per column.

Why do my phone numbers look wrong in Excel?

When Excel opens a CSV it treats phone numbers as numbers: it drops the leading 0, removes the +, and shows long numbers as 9.19877E+11. The .xlsx from this page stores every cell as text, so numbers appear exactly as they were in the VCF.

What if a contact has several phone numbers or emails?

Each one gets its own column: Phone, Phone 2, Phone 3, and Email, Email 2, and so on, as many as the busiest contact in the file needs. Nothing is merged into one cell and nothing is dropped.

Does it work with iPhone, Android, and Google exports?

Yes. iCloud exports with grouped fields, Android vCard 2.1 files with encoded names, Google Contacts and Outlook vCards all convert, including accented and non-Latin names.

Are contact photos included?

No. A spreadsheet cell cannot hold the image, so photos are left out. Every text field is kept.

I have several VCF files. Can I get one spreadsheet?

Open them together in the VCF viewer, which accepts several files at once, then click Download Excel to get all contacts in one workbook.
